Food for all it's worth contains all the building blocks for your capabilities in life. It is energy-how you fuel yourself! Without food & water you would be dead. However, less dramatically, without enough nutrients and water to pass along those nutrients you'd be starving, malnourished, and dehydrated.
Well, you would feel sluggish, tired (no... exhausted!), stressed, fatigued, depressed, your muscles would grow tiresome and your motivation would be dependent on survival-by any means necessary...
WAIT A MINUTE! Aren't you that now?
Don't you feel sluggish and exhausted, stressed and tired already?
Even after you eat don't you STILL feel pretty sluggish?
What about after a nice kick with coffee, don't you still feel....tired? I know, you probably needed another coffee-or at least that's how you feel.
After a long stressful day eating foods that merely get you through the day and worn down even with those two coffee's, I'm sure you'd head for the fridge and find the healthiest option, right? Like carrots! ....mixed in a.......cake...
I know, I know, the carrots and the cream were so deserving of your taste-buds. But, you're not there yet! Soon but not quite, there's still some work to do!
Yes, I know, you think you deserve that cake after all you DO work your ass off! You manage your way through a day carrying all that stress, exhaustion, and sluggishness. Dammit! You deserve that cake!
(your mind, is seriously clever, it can outsmart even YOU!)
What does this mean?
You've got every single excuse in the book. You've worked out, you've dieted, you've tried ALL (or most) of the diet fads, you've literally found every loop hole and excuse to being this way. You're a prisoner, a victim of the world! Something is REALLY wrong with you, because you've tried everything and just can't succeed. Really, you have, you have proof and all. Wrong. You don't have proof. You think you have proof, if you think it, it must be true, right? Again, our minds are very tricky, they'll try and figure out how to do anything easier or better or faster. If the mind thinks it's done it, there's nothing to stop it. Let's say you've tried to eat gluten free, that was what you tried. Your mind is very sure you tried to eat gluten free, because you ate it once a week. You had a gluten free day, once a week. You didn't lose weight, or achieve the goal of more energy or whatever your goal was from trying 'gluten-free'. It didn't work for you. Perhaps, you even tried 'gluten-free' for months, lost weight, but you felt tired and sluggish, so you just stopped eating 'gluten-free'.
Sound familiar? (even if it's in another application)
Eitherway, the mind believes it 'tried' going gluten-free. It knows that the goal was not achieved, therefore it didn't work. You've tried it, it doesn't work, and now here you are waiting for the next fad to slap you in the face and make a difference.
Unfortunately, your going to hit a lot of road blocks until one sticks. Whatever that one is that you follow, maintain, and continue. That will be the one that works.
A lot of people have tried the Atkins diet and find that it works for them. They can eat cheese, corn, butter.. bacon. How is THAT not awesome? Their body is doing alright (so it looks) and they have lost weight, they seem to have energy, and it's ketosis heaven!
Chances are though, if you're reading this, Atkins didn't work for you--much like it didn't work for me. The carb craving was maybe too much, the fat was maybe too much, and maybe you just didn't feel good.
That's fine, it's important to LISTEN to your body.
Well, don't fret, all this means is that your body is asking you to listen to it. Unfortunately, you don't have little mouths placed all over your body with attached vocal chords or your abdomen would be saying "Hey, I'm going to accumulate stomach fat if you don't stop eating foods that make it IMPOSSIBLE for me to digest" or your arms would say to you whilst in the middle of a pull-up "Yo, listen I'm about to give out I need some more vitamin B6!". Instead, you get muscle strain and a gut that hangs around.
Even if you look physically fit but eat processed foods that barely have enough nutrients to qualify it as 'food' and whatever 5-25% nutrition it does provide is either nuked out or stored away in the aisles to evaporate.
I know...the nutrition label reads that this Hi-C fruit drink containing REAL natural ingredients and provides 50% vitamin C! Yes, vitamin supplements placed into the drink are at the time of packaging, containing 50% vitamin C. You are right. Stored away in a warm location (for however many months/years) and then delivered to the grocery store to be stocked on shelves and then purchased by you on some day of the week/weekend. Then put in your fridge, later to be drank. Yes it probably does have 25% vitamin C left. It's Vitamin C.
You can purchase EmergenC vitamin packets that have about 1000% more vitamin C for less money and you have to add water, however now it's a vitamin supplement. But, imagine, that's what goes through your head for every item you eat.
Even if you aren't fooled by the sugary water imitations, I'm sure you've thought or tried the 2 fruit a day drinks. They are SUPER convincing. You are literally not given any room for logical thinking here, even if you DO outsmart yourself, the advertisements have done it for you. There are two separate fruit on the bottle, saying real fruit bits, it MUST be true, right?
FALSE, again, you've been fooled to thinking this is actually fruit juice. Just like the 'natural juice', just like the 'not from concentrate', just like the 'real fruit' and '2 servings' and whatever else clever advertising can think of to get you to buy their product.
The truth is, if you didn't just squeeze it fresh right in front of your face, it's not fresh squeezed, natural, anything.
If it sat anywhere for longer than 20 minutes, it's lost 50% of its nutrition. Anything over a day, and it's practically sugar water. Not to mention, whatever nutrients are available for your body, you may not even be ABLE to absorb.
Before we get into nutrient absorption.
Let's make sure it's clear, that fruit juices, no matter what advertisement or packaging claims, provide barely any nutrients, >10% of it's originated amount without any additives. That means if I pick an orange off the tree, it's got 100% nutrient capability, after processing (chewed up in a grinder and put through heated treatment), it has up to >10%, unless consumed within the first (1) day of pure juicing.
That doesn't even touch upon organic.
It doesn't touch upon how long it's been in storage (months/years) before it hits the grocery store shelf.
I'm talking actual nutrition content solidly based off of the ripened orange, picked directly from the tree and then consumed by you.
IF the inside of your body is a garbage dump, it's not really going to process that orange as you intended. Even if it's fresh squeezed, right in front of your very eyes. It's not going to process much of anything, unfortunately it may even be the same as taking a few sips of sugar water. For the body, that means, responding to sugar water by dumping the appropriate insulin to level out the blood sugar after drinking the substance (be it fresh squeezed orange juice from your kitchen counter or some fruit juice from the grocery store shelf).
When this happens you have a sip of orange juice on an empty stomach and your insulin is now leveling out your blood sugar, on top of that, say you had a bagel for breakfast, you're going to 'spike' your blood sugar even more, because you basically dumped a whole bunch of sugar into your system. Which is fine, if you're 5. Because you'll run it off in about 2 seconds anyway, running towards the couch and then the ball and then the couch and then the stairs and then the door and back! Why the hell did that kid run all over the place, to literally no where but off the walls-beyond me, but perhaps the reason had something to do with that blood sugar spike. Run it off, it uses up that 'extra energy'... (oooh it makes so much more sense now, doesn't it?) I'm not saying it's OK for a 5 year old, I'm more less spelling out how the human body reacts to such an over dose of sugar into one's system.
Perhaps one of the leading reasons there are so MANY obese children these days, they don't run around, they go watch TV. Running around is too hard, shit getting up to turn off the TV is too hard. (says aloud: "xbox off").
Answer: It's all learned.
Everything has been learned from someone, but who?
Let's not get into the blame game, that can turn into an ugly debate about politics and become like a hunting game, finding subjects to blame. I don't want to get into that here, if you feel so inclined to talk about that sort of what came first the chicken or the egg type conversation, sure email me, but for the sake of "why food matters" let's not get off topic on the analytical reasoning of theoretical analysis regarding the evolution of humanity.
The point is, if you don't provide your body the necessary foundation for eating an orange, don't expect that your body is going to handle that orange as nature intended. If you haven't learned how to do that, and most people haven't, the it's time you did! So, you can have more control over your life than you ever felt possible.
If you realize that the only way for you to eat that orange is if you completely change how you eat so that when you eat the orange, your body knows what to do, without destroying/depleting something in the process. Then take the next step to realizing the benefits of food and how you can utilize them to rid yourself of your ailments.
Because, it really isn't about what energy drink gives you the most energy, or what protein shake to take before a serious workout that 'allows' you to bulk up.
What it's about is not needing that energy drink because you already have enough energy!
Not being depressed because you HAVE enough nutrients and vitamins to control your emotional state.
Not being overweight because you ARE eating healthy and you ARE physically active.
